Root River Trail: Lanesboro to Peterson
This is a stretch of almost 15 miles each way. We made the round trip and despite its longer distance,
it is an easier ride than Fountain to Lanesboro due to the gentler terrain. This piece of the
trail is a
bit curvier than we had grown accustomed to on converted railway grades. It's a nice change.
Whalan, a stop along the way, has the chief
attraction of the Aroma Pie Shop right off the trail. They have ice cream and sandwiches as
well to satisfy the hungry traveler. Minnesotans take great pride in their pies and this is as good a place
as any to see why. A mini golf course and canoe rentals are also available in town.
Peterson is a working farm town with fewer businesses catering specifically to cyclists.
We ate lunch here at Judy's
Country Kitchen. There's no fancy menu or atmosphere here, just a handful of tasty homestyle dinner
selections. This is where the locals go.
