Root River Trail
The Root River Trail meanders by the river of the same name. It is another abandoned railway grade running about 42 miles.
There is also a separate Preston to Harmony spur. The towns along the trail thrive on bicycle travel business. On this trip,
we rode from Fountain to Lanesboro and back, about 11.5 miles each way. We were tempted to go a bit further, but the trip
back includes a 6 mile uphill grade and we didn't want to push it until we were more familiar with the trail. The town of
Lanesboro is well represented in these pictures. Lanesboro loves its bikers and on a nice day the streets are filled with
bicycles. Bikes can be rented for the day at a number of businesses. A winery, antique shops, a German style sausage
shop, ice cream and Amish tours can keep the visitor busy here. We look forward to returning to do more of the trail. The
Minnesota DNR's site is here.
By the way, there are several small farms along the way. I could have gotten more cow pictures, but I think we have
enough from Douglas.
